Rudi Dekkers often found himself surrounded by the media after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. On Sept. 13, 2001, he showed media members the type of plane the two hijackers who trained at his flight school at Venice Municipal Airport.

VENICE — More than a decade after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Rudi Dekkers, whose Venice flight school trained two of the terrorist pilots, told a Houston TV station he would never escape the shadow of that tragedy until he died.

Escape came April 11, when Dekkers died of a heart attack in The Philippines, according to news reports. He was 67.
